Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Twenty-eight years after the rage virus escaped, Britain is cut off from the world and a small island community survives behind a causeway. Twelve-year-old Spike crosses to the mainland for the first time with his father — and discovers that the infected, and the people left behind, have changed in ways no one expected.

Story — 8.5/10
This is not really a zombie film — it is a coming-of-age story that happens to be set among the infected. Spike's journey is about growing up: leaving the safety of home, seeing his mother fade, and learning that the monsters are not always the ones with the virus. The film is structured in chapters, and the final chapter — with Ralph Fiennes's strange, gentle doctor — turns the whole film into something unexpectedly tender. The ending takes a wild swing that will divide audiences, but it is never boring.
Acting — 9.0/10
Alfie Williams, as Spike, carries the whole film — a child performance of rare naturalness and courage. Jodie Comer is heartbreaking as his sick mother, and Aaron Taylor-Johnson is excellent as a father trying to make his son a man too fast. Ralph Fiennes arrives late and steals the film with a performance that is weird, funny and deeply sad all at once.
Direction — 9.0/10
Danny Boyle directs like a man with something to prove. Shot partly on iPhones rigged into wild arrays, the film has a raw, urgent energy — the infected sprint at the camera, the landscape of northern England looks both beautiful and dead, and the editing is ferocious. Boyle also trusts silence: some of the scariest moments are the quietest ones.
Music — 8.0/10
Young Fathers' score is strange and propulsive, and the film's use of a wartime poem recording over the trailer became famous for a reason — it is genuinely chilling. The music never soothes you; it keeps you on edge.
