What "downloading a movie legally" actually means

When people search for how to download a movie, most of them really want one simple thing: to watch a film on a plane, on a train, or somewhere with weak internet — without buffering. The good news is that every major streaming service already lets you do exactly that, legally, inside its own official app.

Here is the important part to understand first. Legal downloading does not give you a movie file. You never get an MP4 or any other file that you own, copy, or move to another device. Instead, the app saves an encrypted copy inside itself, and you watch it from that same app while you are offline. When the download expires, it simply disappears from the app, and you can download it again if it is still available.

That is the whole test, and it is a reliable one: if a website offers you a free movie file to keep, it is not legal. If an app you already pay for lets you save a title inside the app, it is. How to download a movie on Netflix

Netflix downloads work inside the official Netflix app on phones and tablets — iPhone, iPad, Android and Fire devices — and on Windows computers through the Netflix app from the Microsoft Store. They do not work in a web browser, and they do not work on Mac.

1. Open the Netflix app and sign in to your account.
2. Find the movie you want to watch offline.
3. Tap the download icon — the small down-arrow — on the title.
4. Wait for the download to finish, then open the Downloads tab to watch it without internet.

A few limits are worth knowing. On the ad-supported plan you get 15 downloads per month. On ad-free plans you can keep up to 100 active downloads per device. Not every title can be downloaded — some films are excluded because of licensing — and downloads expire: some titles must be finished within 48 hours once you start watching them. Netflix also offers Smart Downloads and Downloads for You, which can automatically download suggested titles over Wi-Fi so you always have something ready to watch offline.

Tip: download over Wi-Fi before you travel. A full film in high quality can be large, and mobile data will disappear fast.

How to download a movie on Prime Video

Prime Video downloads work inside the official Prime Video app on Fire tablets, iOS, Android, macOS and the Windows 10/11 app. Like Netflix, downloads do not work in a web browser.

1. Open the Prime Video app and sign in.
2. Open the movie's detail page and tap Download.
3. For TV shows, you can download a whole season or pick individual episodes.
4. Find your saved titles in the Downloads section and watch them offline.

Movies you rent or buy are generally more flexible for downloads than titles included with your subscription. Downloads are locked inside the app — they are not MP4 files you can move — and they are usually valid for about 30 days. Once you start watching a downloaded title, you usually have about 48 hours to finish it. You can choose your download quality — Good, Better or Best — with higher quality taking more storage space. One quirk to remember: downloaded titles cannot be played over Chromecast or AirPlay, so plan to watch on the device itself.

How to download a movie on YouTube

YouTube has two different legal download routes, and people often mix them up.

Movies you buy or rent. Films purchased or rented from YouTube Movies & TV can be downloaded in the YouTube app on iOS 11+ and Android (app version 16.23+) — and you do not need YouTube Premium for this. Just sign in with the same Google account you used to buy or rent. Rentals give you 30 days to start watching and about 48 hours to finish once you press play. Purchased titles can be downloaded on up to 5 devices; rented titles can be downloaded on one device at a time.

YouTube Premium. Premium members can also download eligible videos for offline viewing on mobile and in supported desktop browsers. This covers regular YouTube videos, not just films.

One clear limit: movies that are free with ads are not eligible for the download flow. And a warning worth taking seriously — third-party downloader tools and websites violate YouTube's terms of service. They are also a common source of malware and fake download buttons. If a tool promises to "save any YouTube video", stay away from it and use the official options above.

How to download a movie on Disney+

Disney+ downloads work only inside the Disney+ app on phones and tablets — iPhone, iPad, Android and Fire tablets. They do not work on TVs or computers.

1. Open the Disney+ app and sign in.
2. Find the movie you want to save.
3. Tap the download icon — the small down-arrow — on the title.
4. Open the Downloads tab to watch it offline.

Downloads are available only on plans without adverts — in the US that means Disney+ Premium or Premium bundles, though plan names differ by country. You can download on up to 10 devices per account, and your downloads must reconnect to the internet at least once every 30 days to stay valid. Quality settings are Standard, Medium or High. As with the other services, not every title is downloadable, so check for the download icon on the title you want.

It is tempting to click a search result that promises a free movie file, especially when a film is not on any service you subscribe to. Resist it. Those sites are not just illegal — they are also the worst way to watch a film.

• Legal risk: downloading or sharing copyrighted films from unauthorised sources can break copyright law in your country.
