Our detailed review
Story — 6.0/10
The premise is a classic pressure-cooker: a political couple, a kidnapped son, a ransom clock ticking through a campaign. The first act works well — Affleck sets up the Kimballs' polished public life and lets it crack fast. But the film's big idea, that power can't protect you, gets repeated more than it gets explored, and the secrets the couple are hiding turn out to be less shocking than the film's hushed tone suggests. The final act trades suspense for revelation, and the revelations don't quite pay off the tension.
Acting — 7.0/10
Ben Affleck is solid as Mark — weary, cornered, and believable as a man used to buying his way out of problems. Kerry Washington matches him as Abigail, holding the emotional centre when the plot starts spinning. But the film belongs to Gillian Anderson as Dayle, the fixer who operates off the official radar: icy, funny, and the only character who seems to be enjoying herself. Steven Yeun, Adriana Paz and Ray Fisher are strong in support, though some of them get less to do than they deserve.
Direction — 6.5/10
This is Affleck's sixth film as a director, and his craft is evident: the Los Angeles locations look sharp, Robert Elswit's camerawork is clean, and the pacing rarely sags. What is missing is the propulsive energy of The Town or Argo — Animals plays more like a prestige TV thriller than a big-screen one, and Affleck the director never quite finds a visual idea to match the story's paranoia. The film is handsomely made and oddly flat at the same time.
Music — 7.0/10
Harry Gregson-Williams' score is one of the film's quiet strengths — low, pulsing tension that keeps scenes taut even when the dialogue goes soft. The ten-track soundtrack, released by Netflix Music on the film's release day, leans on uneasy strings and electronic dread rather than big themes, and it suits a story about people smiling in public while panicking in private.
What works
- Gillian Anderson is superb as the fixer Dayle — the film's most watchable presence.
- A strong, classic premise: a kidnapping crashing into a political campaign.
- Affleck and Washington are believable as a couple whose marriage is a negotiation.
- Gregson-Williams' tense, understated score keeps the pressure on.
What doesn't work
- Critics were cold (31% on Rotten Tomatoes) — the twists don't land as hard as promised.
- The second half explains more than it thrills.
- Some strong supporting players are underused.
- The AI-in-production controversy overshadowed the film before release.
Final verdict — 6.5/10
A tense, star-powered thriller that never quite bites as hard as it should. Worth a watch for Affleck and Anderson — just don't expect another Gone Girl.
