Our detailed review
Story — 8.0/10
The story is the most familiar part of the film — a family under threat, a villain seeking revenge, a battle for Pandora's soul. But Cameron deepens it in one crucial way: the Ash People are not villains in the old sense. They are Na'vi who have suffered and turned to fire, and the film asks whether the Sullys' way is the only way. The grief storyline, carried across the whole film, gives the spectacle a genuine emotional spine. The film's length is felt in the middle hour, but the final act is worth every minute.
Acting — 8.5/10
Sam Worthington and Zoe Saldaña are the heart of the film, and Saldaña in particular delivers her best performance in the series — a mother torn between grief and fury. Sigourney Weaver, playing the teenage Kiri, is a marvel of motion-capture acting. Oona Chaplin is a magnetic new villain as Varang, and Stephen Lang's Quaritch remains one of blockbuster cinema's great antagonists.
Direction — 9.5/10
James Cameron is the greatest spectacle filmmaker alive, and Fire and Ash is his proof. The film's visuals — fire, ash, volcanic landscapes, and the most photorealistic creatures ever put on screen — are genuinely jaw-dropping. The 3D is the best in the business, the action is staged with total clarity, and the film's three hours and seventeen minutes fly by in the theatre. Nobody else makes films like this.
Music — 9.0/10
Simon Franglen's score is sweeping and emotional, building on James Horner's original themes while giving the Ash People their own darker sound. The music carries the film's grief and its triumph in equal measure.
What works
- The most visually stunning film ever made — Pandora has never looked better.
- Zoe Saldaña delivers her best performance in the series.
- A darker, more complex take on the Na'vi with the Ash People.
- A finale that is pure cinema.
What doesn't work
- At 3h 17m, the middle hour drags a little.
- The core story is familiar — this is not a film of surprises.
Final verdict — 8.6/10
The most visually stunning film ever made — and a worthy third chapter. See it in 3D, on the biggest screen you can find. This is why cinemas exist.
