Synopsis (spoiler-free)
An undercover DEA agent wakes up with amnesia in a Mexican mental institution. While several drug cartels hunt him for something he stole, he gradually remembers who he is — and fights his way out of a locked-down hospital.
Our detailed review
Story — 4.5/10
The story is pure formula: Cain wakes up with no memory, discovers he is a DEA agent, and spends the rest of the film fighting cartel gunmen through a hospital while trying to remember what he stole. There is not a single original beat in it — the amnesia setup, the double-crosses, the locked-down building — and the screenplay by Van B. Nguyen never finds a twist to call its own. What saves it from tedium is pace: at 81 minutes, the film never lingers long enough on any one cliché for it to curdle.
Acting — 5.0/10
Josh Duhamel is the whole reason this works as well as it does: ever likable, physically convincing, and game for every corridor shootout. Abbie Cornish is solid as Anna, the doctor caught in the crossfire, and Nick Nolte brings grizzled authority to the DEA agent trying to help from the outside. Omar Chaparro and Lou Ferrigno Jr. round out a cast that is better than the material — everyone plays it straight, which is exactly what a film like this needs.
Direction — 5.0/10
Sam Macaroni, who shot the VR fight sequences for John Wick: Chapter 3, directs briskly and without fuss: the action is coherent, the hospital location is used well, and the film bops along after a slow setup. There is no visual flair to speak of and the gunfights blur together, but Macaroni understands the assignment — an 81-minute Netflix action movie that asks nothing of you and delivers exactly what it promises.
Music — 4.5/10
Brandon Campbell's score does the job without ever standing out: tense pulses under the action, quieter strains for the memory fragments, and nothing you will hum afterwards. For a film this functional, functional music is arguably the right call — though a more distinctive sound might have given Blackout the personality its story lacks.
What works
- Josh Duhamel's easy likability carries a thin script.
- A brisk 81-minute runtime — in and out before it wears out its welcome.
- Coherent, well-staged hospital action.
- A surprise second life: No. 5–6 on Netflix's global Top 10 in October 2026.
What doesn't work
- Critics were brutal (20% on Rotten Tomatoes, 3.9 on IMDb).
- The story is entirely formula — not one original beat.
- The action blurs together and the score is forgettable.
- It was removed from Netflix in 2025 before its 2026 return — availability has been unstable.
Final verdict — 4.8/10
Generic, brisk and oddly watchable — the 81-minute action movie you put on and half-watch. Bourne meets Die Hard, minus the budget and the memory.
