Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Teddy is a young man who is absolutely certain about one thing: the CEO of a giant pharmaceutical company is an alien from the Andromeda galaxy, and she is planning to destroy Earth. So he and his cousin Don do the only logical thing — they kidnap her. Locked in a basement, Michelle Fuller has to convince two conspiracy theorists that she is human, while Teddy has to convince himself that he is the hero of this story. What follows is a strange, funny and deeply uncomfortable battle of wills — and nobody in the room is quite who they seem.
Our detailed review
Story — 8.0/10
Bugonia is a remake of the 2003 Korean cult film Save the Green Planet!, and Lanthimos makes it entirely his own — a chamber piece about belief, power and who gets to decide what is real. The film lives in the interrogation scenes: long, tense conversations where the power keeps shifting between captor and captive, and every answer raises a worse question. The final act takes a turn that will divide audiences — some will call it brilliant, others will call it a cop-out — but nobody will call it boring.
Acting — 9.0/10
Jesse Plemons is extraordinary as Teddy — funny, frightening and heartbreakingly sincere, a man whose delusions are the only thing holding him together. Emma Stone, shaved head and all, is his perfect match as Michelle: cool, furious and smarter than everyone in the room, playing a woman who weaponises reason against madness. Aidan Delbis, a first-time actor, is a genuine discovery as Don, the quiet cousin caught between the two of them.
Direction — 8.5/10
Lanthimos shoots almost the entire film on 8-perf 35mm VistaVision, giving the basement scenes a strange, oversized beauty — every close-up feels monumental. His signature style is here: deadpan dialogue, long takes, and a refusal to tell you how to feel. It is his most accessible film and also one of his strangest, which is quite a trick.
Music — 8.5/10
Jerskin Fendrix's score is paranoid and queasy — low drones, sudden stings and long silences that make the basement feel like it is closing in. It never lets you relax, which is the point: you are supposed to feel as trapped as the characters.
What works
- Two powerhouse lead performances — Plemons and Stone are both awards-worthy.
- A premise that sounds like a joke and turns into a genuinely unsettling thriller.
- Gorgeous VistaVision cinematography that makes a basement look epic.
- A story that trusts the audience to argue about what really happened.
What doesn't work
- The ending will frustrate viewers who want clear answers.
- The pacing drags in the middle stretch of interrogation scenes.
- Its bleak worldview and graphic violence will not suit every viewer.
Final verdict — 8.5/10
A brilliantly acted, deeply strange thriller that will live in your head for days — Lanthimos at his most accessible and his most unsettling.

Box Office

| Verdict | Flop |
It was Lanthimos's biggest wide opening ever, beating Poor Things' record — but against a $45 million budget, a $43.8 million worldwide total fell well short of breakeven, and the film faded fast after its opening weekends.
