Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Denji, the devil hunter who can turn into Chainsaw Man, is finally getting a taste of normal life — a movie date with Makima, quiet mornings with Power, and a job that almost feels ordinary. Then a girl named Reze appears in the rain outside a phone booth, and Denji's heart does something it has never done before. She teaches him to swim, laughs at his jokes, and asks him to run away with her. But in Denji's world, nothing sweet stays sweet for long — and the girl with the smile is hiding a secret that could blow his whole life apart.

Story — 9.0/10

The Reze Arc is the part of the manga fans have waited years to see animated, and the film treats it like the event it is. The first half is a gentle, funny, almost tender romance — Denji learning what it feels like to be wanted — and the second half turns that tenderness into a weapon. MAPPA keeps the story tight at 100 minutes, cutting nothing essential and letting the quiet scenes breathe before the explosions start. The ending hurts in the way only Tatsuki Fujimoto can make it hurt: a small, ordinary promise that never gets kept.

Acting — 9.0/10

Kikunosuke Toya returns as Denji and nails the character's mix of hunger, hope and heartbreak — he plays a boy who has never been loved trying very hard not to mess it up. Reina Ueda is the film's secret weapon as Reze, switching between warmth and menace so smoothly that you believe both versions of her at once. Fairouz Ai's Power and Tomori Kusunoki's Makima provide the comedy and the chill, and the English dub (Ryan Colt Levy, Alexis Tipton) is equally strong.

Direction — 9.5/10

Tatsuya Yoshihara, who handled the first season's action, directs with total confidence — the film looks noticeably different from the TV series, closer to Fujimoto's manga linework, and the action set pieces are staged with a clarity most anime films never manage. The pool scene, the festival fireworks and the final chase are all showpieces, but Yoshihara's best choice is the patience: he lets Denji and Reze just talk, and trusts the audience to feel the trap closing.

Music — 9.0/10

Kensuke Ushio's score leans into aching strings and anxious electronics that make even the sweet scenes feel slightly wrong — exactly right for this story. Kenshi Yonezu's theme "Iris Out" is a rush of energy, while the ending song "Jane Doe" with Hikaru Utada lands like a gut punch after the film's final image. One of the year's best anime soundtracks.

What works

• A love story that is genuinely sweet before it turns devastating — the emotional core is real.
• MAPPA's animation is a clear step up from the TV series, with manga-faithful character designs.
• Reze is one of anime's great tragic characters, and Reina Ueda's performance makes her unforgettable.

• Newcomers will be lost — the film assumes you watched season one and the Katana Man arc.
