Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Matt Hagen is a rising Hollywood actor — handsome, ambitious, one good role away from real fame. One bad night ends with his face slashed open by men working for Gotham crime boss Markos Szabo, and overnight his career, his looks and his life collapse together. Desperate, he volunteers for an experimental treatment from Dr Caitlyn Corr, a scientist working on nanites that can rebuild damaged flesh. The treatment works. Then it keeps working. Matt's body learns to shift, stretch and reshape itself — and the men who discarded him are about to learn what he has become.

Our detailed review

Story — 8.0/10

Clayface is a monster movie built on a simple, cruel question: what is a man worth when his face is gone? The script, by horror specialist Mike Flanagan and Hossein Amini, treats Matt Hagen's fall as a tragedy first and a comic-book origin second. The first act — the party, the attack, the slow ruin of a career — plays like a Hollywood horror story in its own right, and it makes the later revenge feel earned rather than cartoonish. The middle sags a little when the film has to explain its own science, and a couple of twists arrive exactly when you expect them. But the story's spine is strong: this is about vanity, betrayal and what revenge does to the person holding the knife.

Acting — 8.5/10

Tom Rhys Harries is the film's great gamble and its great success. He has the polished charm to sell Matt as a rising star, and the wounded hunger to sell him after that polish is taken away — and he keeps selling it even under heavy prosthetics, when his face is literally melting. Naomi Ackie gives Dr Caitlyn Corr a conflicted warmth: she is a scientist who believes she is healing people and slowly realises she is building a weapon. David Dencik is coldly terrifying as Szabo, and Eddie Marsan, as Matt's crooked manager, gets one of the film's nastiest scenes. The clever trick is that almost everyone in the cast gets a turn playing a version of Hagen, because a shapeshifter borrows other people's faces — and the ensemble handles it beautifully.

Direction — 8.5/10

James Watkins, who made Eden Lake and Speak No Evil, directs Clayface like a horror film that happens to wear a DC label, not the other way round. He shoots Liverpool as a stand-in for Gotham with a grubby, lived-in feel, and he trusts practical effects over digital ones — the transformation scenes are tactile, wet and genuinely queasy in the best way. The film is also DC Studios' first R-rated theatrical release, and Watkins uses that freedom: the violence is graphic, the tone is adult, and the scares come from what you half-see rather than what jumps at you. The pacing is lean at 108 minutes, and the final act — Matt's confrontation with Szabo — is staged with a nasty, operatic glee.

Music — 8.0/10

Volker Bertelmann's score is low, brooding and deliberately uncomfortable — drones and uneasy strings that make even the glossy Hollywood scenes feel wrong. It rarely draws attention to itself, which is the point: the music keeps your shoulders tense while the camera does the shocking. The transformation sequences get the score's best moments, with a rising, almost choral swell as Matt's body stops obeying him. Effective rather than hummable, and exactly what the film needs.

Final verdict — 8.3/10

A gruesome, heartfelt monster tragedy — DC's bravest swing in years. Go for the body horror; stay for the tragedy underneath it.

Clayface opened at No. 1 in the US with $24.5 million — the smallest opening of any recent DC film, but on a budget of just $30–44 million it nearly covered its entire production cost in the opening weekend. Audiences gave it an A- CinemaScore, a rare grade for a horror film, and critics gave it 76% on Rotten Tomatoes against a 94% audience score. By its fifth day it had passed $50 million worldwide, and with Halloween falling on its second weekend, it has room to keep growing.
