It is 1986, and Ed and Lorraine Warren have retired from demonology — until the Smurl family, tormented by a presence in their Pennsylvania home, begs for help. Last Rites works because it is a family story first and a horror film second. The Smurl haunting is genuinely unsettling, but the film's real subject is the Warrens themselves: an ageing couple who have given their lives to this work, now watching their daughter walk the same dangerous path. A few scares rely on familiar Conjuring tricks, but the story earns its emotion.

Vera Farmiga and Patrick Wilson have played the Warrens for twelve years, and it shows — their chemistry is effortless, and their performances here are their warmest and most lived-in.
