Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Dubbed "the greatest that never was", Sonny Hayes (Brad Pitt) was Formula 1's most promising phenom of the 1990s until an accident on the track nearly ended his career. Thirty years later, he's a nomadic racer-for-hire when he's approached by his former teammate Ruben Cervantes (Javier Bardem), owner of a struggling Formula 1 team on the verge of collapse. Ruben convinces Sonny to come back for one last shot at saving the team — driving alongside hotshot rookie Joshua Pearce (Damson Idris), who is intent on setting his own pace.
Our detailed review
Story — 7.5/10
Let's be honest: the story follows the sports-movie playbook almost beat for beat. A washed-up veteran gets one last ride, a brash rookie needs to learn humility, a struggling team needs a miracle, and the final race decides everything. If you have seen any underdog sports film, you will see most of the turns coming. What saves it is how sincerely it is told — the film genuinely loves racing, and the mentor-rivalry between Sonny and Joshua has enough warmth to carry the familiar structure. It is predictable, but it is rarely boring, because the races themselves keep raising the stakes.
Acting — 8.5/10
Brad Pitt is perfectly cast as Sonny Hayes, bringing the same relaxed, lived-in cool he has refined over decades — a man who has made peace with being forgotten and then discovers he hasn't. Damson Idris gives the film its energy as Joshua Pearce, all swagger and insecurity in the right proportions, and his scenes with Pitt are the film's best. Javier Bardem is charming as team owner Ruben, Kerry Condon is sharp as the team's technical director Kate McKenna, and Tobias Menzies makes a fine corporate villain. Real F1 drivers appear as themselves, which adds a layer of authenticity no casting could fake.
Direction — 9.0/10
Joseph Kosinski, the director of Top Gun: Maverick, does for racing what he did for flying. The film was shot during actual Grand Prix weekends, with Pitt and Idris behind the wheel, and a new camera system developed by cinematographer Claudio Miranda puts the viewer in the cockpit at full speed. You feel the braking zones, the overtakes, the spray in the wet — it is the most visceral driving ever put on film. The races are staged as small stories inside the bigger one, each with its own tension and release. If the editing occasionally cuts too fast to let a moment breathe, the sheer craft still overwhelms the complaint.
Music — 9.0/10
Hans Zimmer's score is a pulse. Electronic, driving and unashamedly big, it turns pit stops into set pieces and quiet scenes into countdowns. The music never lets the film's energy drop, even in the slower garage and boardroom scenes. It is exactly the kind of score a summer blockbuster needs — you leave the cinema hearing engines.
What works
- Racing sequences filmed at real Grands Prix — unmatched speed and immersion.
- Brad Pitt's star turn and his chemistry with Damson Idris.
- A Hans Zimmer score that keeps the whole film at full throttle.
- Real F1 teams, drivers and circuits give it rare authenticity.
What doesn't work
- The story is predictable — every sports-movie beat arrives on schedule.
- At 2h 35m it is long, and some mid-film scenes drag between races.
Final verdict — 8.4/10
The most visceral racing ever put on film, even if the story takes the familiar line. See it on the biggest screen with the loudest sound you can find.
