Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Victor Frankenstein is a brilliant, egotistical scientist who believes he can conquer death itself. He builds a creature from corpses — and the moment it opens its eyes, both creator and creation begin their long, tragic undoing. Guillermo del Toro's lifelong dream project, told from both their points of view: first the father's obsession, then the son's awakening.
Our detailed review
Story — 8.5/10
Del Toro returns to Mary Shelley's novel and restores what most adaptations cut: the Creature's intelligence, eloquence and moral reasoning. Told in two movements — Victor's story, then the Creature's — the film asks the novel's devastating question: who is the real monster, the thing that was made, or the man who refused to love it? At two and a half hours it occasionally luxuriates too long in its own beauty, and the middle section repeats its central argument — but the final hour is devastating.
Acting — 9.0/10
Oscar Isaac plays Victor as a man consumed by ego and grief, brilliant and unbearable in equal measure. Jacob Elordi is a revelation as the Creature — eloquent, furious and achingly lonely, closer to Shelley's novel than any screen version before him. Mia Goth, Christoph Waltz and Charles Dance give the film its dark, gothic spine.
Direction — 9.0/10
The craft is staggering: Dan Laustsen's photography, Tamara Deverell's production design and the creature work build a gothic world you can feel in your bones. Del Toro directs with total confidence, letting long, operatic scenes breathe. This is a filmmaker finally making the film he has wanted to make his whole life, and it shows in every frame.
Music — 8.5/10
Alexandre Desplat's score is lush, mournful and romantic — the sound of a creator falling in love with his own ambition and then watching it rot. It carries the film's emotional weight without ever overpowering the performances.
What works
- Jacob Elordi's Creature — the most faithful and moving version ever filmed.
- Staggering craft: photography, production design and creature work.
- A faithful, two-part structure that honours Shelley's novel.
- A devastating final hour and a real case for compassion over fear.
What doesn't work
- At 2h 30m it occasionally luxuriates too long in its own beauty.
- The middle section repeats its central argument.
- Victor's unlikeability may test some viewers' patience.
Final verdict — 8.7/10
A gorgeous, heartbroken gothic epic — del Toro's monster finally gets the soul Shelley gave him.
