Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Years after the original Gladiator, Lucius — living in exile in Numidia — is enslaved after a Roman invasion and forced to fight in the Colosseum, where he seeks vengeance against the Roman general Acacius while the scheming former slave Macrinus plots to seize power in Rome.
Our detailed review
Story — 7.0/10
The story is deliberately familiar: another wronged man, another road to the Colosseum, another corrupt Rome to cleanse. That familiarity is both the film's comfort and its limit — the screenplay hits the expected beats and rarely surprises, and Lucius's secret heritage does a lot of heavy lifting. But the political intrigue around Macrinus is genuinely juicy, and the film's best stretches are the ones where Rome's decadence, not its arena, takes centre stage.
Acting — 8.5/10
Denzel Washington is the film's towering presence: Macrinus is charming, terrifying and funny, often in the same line, and he is rightly singled out as the highlight. Paul Mescal brings brooding physicality to Lucius and grows into the role as the film goes on. Pedro Pascal is quietly excellent as Acacius, the honourable general on the wrong side, while Connie Nielsen returns with grace as Lucilla. Joseph Quinn and Fred Hechinger make a memorably unhinged pair of emperors.
Direction — 7.5/10
Ridley Scott, at 86, directs like a man half his age: the arena sequences are enormous, brutal and beautifully staged, including a flooded Colosseum naval battle that is worth the ticket alone. Where the film sags is between the set pieces — some of the plotting is perfunctory, and the digital spectacle occasionally overwhelms the human drama. Still, as pure cinematic scale, few living directors can touch this.
Music — 8.0/10
Harry Gregson-Williams takes over from Hans Zimmer and does the impossible job with grace: his score honours the original's sound without simply copying it, driving the arena sequences with pounding percussion and giving Lucius's journey a mournful, searching theme. It is muscular, emotional work — and a reminder that Gregson-Williams is one of the great blockbuster composers of his generation.
What works
- Denzel Washington's magnificent, scene-stealing Macrinus.
- Spectacular arena action, including the flooded Colosseum battle.
- Paul Mescal grows into a convincing new gladiator hero.
- A score that honours Zimmer's original while standing on its own.
What doesn't work
- The story is familiar to a fault — a handsome remix of the original.
- Critics were positive but measured (around 70% on Rotten Tomatoes).
- The huge budget meant even $462 million worldwide felt soft.
- Some digital spectacle overwhelms the human drama.
Final verdict — 7.6/10
Spectacular, violent and hugely entertaining — not the original, but a worthy return to the arena. Are you not entertained? You will be.

| Verdict | Average |
A soft result for a film of this scale: $462.2 million worldwide (Box Office Mojo) against a $310 million gross budget plus heavy marketing left only a small profit at best, and trade coverage called it a theatrical disappointment. Audiences liked it more than the accountants did (around 82% audience score, B CinemaScore), and its Netflix return to No. 1 shows the film's long tail.
