Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Sixteen years ago, Bob Ferguson was a revolutionary. Now he is a paranoid, stoned father living off the grid with his teenage daughter Willa — until his old nemesis, the fascist Colonel Lockjaw, resurfaces and Willa disappears. One father, one daughter, and a past that will not stay buried.
Our detailed review
Story — 9.0/10
Loosely inspired by Thomas Pynchon's Vineland, Anderson's film asks what revolution costs the people who live it — and what it costs their children. Bob's paranoia is funny until it is not, and the film's genius is how it makes you feel both: the comedy of a washed-up radical and the terror of a father who was right all along. It is long, it is messy, and its politics are deliberately uncomfortable — and it is the best American film of the year.
Acting — 9.5/10
Leonardo DiCaprio gives one of his best performances as Bob, a man whose ideals curdled into paranoia, and Chase Infiniti is a revelation as Willa, the daughter who refuses to inherit her father's war. Sean Penn is terrifying as Lockjaw, Benicio del Toro brings warmth and wit to the film's moral centre, and Regina Hall and Teyana Taylor are superb throughout.
Direction — 9.5/10
Shot on VistaVision, the film looks enormous and tactile — car chases that feel genuinely dangerous, quiet scenes that feel just as tense. Anderson's camera never sits still and never shows off; it follows the characters' panic and their tenderness with equal attention. This is a master at full power.
Music — 8.5/10
Jonny Greenwood's score never lets the tension drop — restless, dissonant, occasionally beautiful. It is the sound of a country coming apart, and it binds the film's comedy and terror together.
What works
- DiCaprio's best performance in years, and a star-making turn from Chase Infiniti.
- A story that is furious, funny and profoundly humane at once.
- VistaVision cinematography and genuinely dangerous action.
- A score that never lets the tension drop.
What doesn't work
- At 2h 42m it is a long sit, and some subplots wander.
- Its politics are deliberately uncomfortable and will divide viewers.
- The messiness is the point, but it is still messy.
Final verdict — 9.0/10
PTA's masterpiece of madness — fierce, funny and profoundly humane.
