Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Twenty-eight years after the events of the first film, the Owens family is still living under the curse cast by their ancestor Maria Owens: any man who falls in love with an Owens woman dies. Sally and Gillian believed they had broken it — until Sally's second husband dies soon after their wedding, and Sally, heartbroken, casts a spell to make her daughters forget magic ever existed. Years later, Sally's daughter Kylie starts uncovering the family's buried secrets and discovering powers of her own, just as the curse tightens its grip. To end it once and for all, the Owens women must travel from Massachusetts to the English village where their magic began — and one of them will have to make the ultimate sacrifice.

Our detailed review

Story — 7.0/10

Practical Magic 2 has a lovely idea at its centre: a curse that can only be broken by a willing sacrifice, and a family that has spent centuries running from it. The film's emotional spine — Sally learning to trust magic again, Kylie discovering who she really is, and the aunts facing the end of their long lives — is genuinely moving, and the final act earns its tears. The trouble is the journey there. The plot is muddled in the middle: a dark warlock, a stolen grimoire, a village full of secrets and a professor with his own curse all compete for attention, and the film does not always explain itself clearly. Scenes jump from Massachusetts to England and back with little breathing room. It is a film with a beautiful heart and a messy map — and for most viewers, the heart will win.

Acting — 8.5/10

Sandra Bullock and Nicole Kidman are the whole reason this sequel exists, and they are wonderful. Bullock plays Sally with a weariness that feels real — a woman who has lost too much and decided that the safest thing is to feel nothing — and Kidman gives Gillian a wild, warm energy that balances her sister perfectly. Their scenes together have the easy rhythm of people who have known each other for decades, because, in a sense, they have. Dianne Wiest and Stockard Channing steal every scene they are in as aunts Jet and Franny, bringing humour and heartbreak in equal measure. Joey King is strong as Kylie, though the film gives her less room to grow than it should, and Lee Pace is charming as the professor who studies magic. The cast is the film's greatest strength.

Direction — 7.5/10

Susanne Bier, who directed Bird Box, brings a steadier, more emotional hand to the material than the original film had. She films the Owens house like a place you would want to live in — warm kitchens, candlelight, gardens full of herbs — and the English village of Thornfield, shot on location in southern England, has a properly gothic atmosphere with its castle ruins and misty lanes. Bier is best with the actors: the family scenes feel lived-in and real, and she lets the film's big emotional moments breathe instead of rushing past them. Where she struggles is with the plot's clutter — too many villains, too many secrets, too little time to untangle them. The film could have used twenty more minutes of story and twenty fewer of setup.

Music — 8.0/10

Rupert Gregson-Williams' score is warm and wistful, full of gentle piano and strings that suit a film about family and loss. The soundtrack also brings back the spirit of the original with new songs, including a cover of Billy Joel's "And So It Goes" by Brandi Carlile and original songs by Bleachers and Aldae. The music does a lot of the film's emotional work — it tells you when to feel hopeful and when to feel afraid, and it never puts a foot wrong. The famous Stevie Nicks needle drop that fans were waiting for arrives, and it is worth the wait. It is a soundtrack that feels like autumn: cosy, a little sad, and full of magic.

Final verdict — 7.8/10

A warm, witchy homecoming — the Owens sisters are back, and fans will love it.

VerdictFlop

The sequel opened at No. 1 and ended Spider-Man: Brand New Day's six-week reign at the top of the North American box office — but it fell 59% in its second weekend and faded fast. Against a $75 million budget, its $106 million worldwide total fell well short of the roughly $150 million break-even point, and Variety estimated the theatrical run could lose Warner Bros. $30–40 million. Audiences liked it far more than critics did: 91% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes against 36% from critics.

Do I need to watch the original Practical Magic before the sequel?
