Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Dek is a young Yautja runt, cast out by his own clan for being too small to hunt. Exiled to Genna — a planet so deadly it is called the death planet — he must kill the unkillable Kalisk to prove his worth. Along the way he finds an unlikely ally: Thia, a damaged Weyland-Yutani android with her own mission. What follows is a survival adventure about pride, belonging and what it means to be a hunter when you are the smallest thing in the jungle.

The genius of Badlands is its simplest idea: the deadliest hunter in the galaxy is an underdog. Dek's quest — kill the Kalisk, earn his clan's respect — is a classic coming-of-age story dressed in franchise armour, and it works because the film takes Dek's shame and stubbornness seriously. Genna itself is a character: hostile flora, towering beasts and traps at every turn. The middle act sags while the film explains its own lore, and the Weyland-Yutani thread never quite pays off — but the final act, with Dek facing his father and claiming his clan, is genuinely rousing.
Acting — 8.5/10
Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi gives Dek a real emotional arc beneath the prosthetics: pride, shame, stubbornness and finally a found family. Elle Fanning is superb in a dual role as the android sisters Thia and Tessa, playing warmth and cold calculation with the same face. The film's best scenes are the quiet ones between them — a monster and a machine learning to trust each other.
Direction — 9.0/10
Dan Trachtenberg, who revived the franchise with Prey, shoots Genna like a beautiful nightmare. The action is staged with real clarity — you always know where Dek is, what is hunting him and what is at stake — and the film trusts its visuals over exposition. The PG-13 rating costs the film some gore, but the set pieces are so well designed that you rarely miss it.
Music — 8.5/10
Sarah Schachner and Benjamin Wallfisch's score blends primal percussion with eerie electronics, giving Genna a sound as alien as its landscape. It swells exactly when Dek's story needs it and stays out of the way when the action speaks for itself.
