Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Morgan Grant and her teenage daughter Clara already live separate lives under the same roof — Morgan determined that Clara will not repeat her mistakes, Clara determined to escape her mother's careful, predictable world. Then a car crash kills Morgan's husband Chris and her sister Jenny, and the aftermath reveals a betrayal that shatters what is left of the family. As Morgan leans on her brother-in-law Jonah to grieve, Clara finds first love with Miller Adams, a classmate with dreams of filmmaking — and mother and daughter must decide whether the truth will push them apart for good, or finally bring them back to each other.
Our detailed review
Story — 6.5/10
Regretting You is adapted from Colleen Hoover's 2019 novel, and it plays exactly like a Hoover adaptation: big emotions, big secrets, and a plot that turns on a betrayal revealed at the worst possible moment. The mother-daughter spine of the story is genuinely affecting — two women grieving the same people in completely different ways — and the film's best scenes are the quiet ones where Morgan and Clara finally say what they have been holding back. But the plotting is a stack of contrivances: secrets pile on secrets, characters withhold the obvious, and the film leans on text messages and voiceover where a look would do. The second half, where the two love stories run side by side, is the stronger half; the first half asks you to mourn people you barely know.
Acting — 7.5/10
Allison Williams is the film's anchor and its best reason to watch. As Morgan, she plays grief as something that makes a person smaller and harder at the same time, and she keeps the character sympathetic even when Morgan is at her most controlling. Dave Franco, as Jonah, brings a restless, exhausted warmth to the film's other grieving adult. Mckenna Grace and Mason Thames, as Clara and Miller, have a sweet, low-key chemistry — their scenes together are the film's gentlest moments — though their romance sometimes feels like a different, flatter film stapled onto the mother's story. Scott Eastwood and Willa Fitzgerald do strong work in small roles as the people whose deaths set everything in motion.
Direction — 7.0/10
Josh Boone, who directed The Fault in Our Stars, knows how to stage heightened young-adult emotion — and when the film lets its actors sit in a scene, it works. But the direction here is uneven: the staging is often inert, the tone swings between Hallmark warmth and soap-opera melodrama, and the film's reliance on texting scenes and animated message bubbles gets old fast. The film looks handsome — warm light, pretty small-town frames — but it rarely finds a visual idea of its own. Boone's best choice is trusting Williams to carry the grief; his weakest is letting the plot's coincidences do the emotional work instead.
Music — 7.5/10
Nathaniel Walcott's score is tender and unobtrusive, nudging the film toward romance without ever overpowering it — piano and strings that swell gently at the right moments and then get out of the way. The film's musical highlight is the scene where Jonah plays Morgan a song from their shared past, which does more emotional work in two minutes than several scenes of dialogue. It is a solid, professional score for a film that needs its music to do a lot of quiet lifting.
What works
- Allison Williams' grounded, painful performance as Morgan.
- The mother-daughter reconciliation at the film's heart is genuinely moving.
- A sweet, believable first-love story between Clara and Miller.
- Strong word of mouth: audiences rated it far higher than critics, and it climbed to No. 1 in its second weekend.
What doesn't work
- The plot leans on contrivance — secrets withheld for no good reason, coincidences doing the heavy lifting.
- Overuse of texting scenes and animated message bubbles.
- The two love stories sometimes feel like two different films.
- Critics were cold for a reason: at 29% on Rotten Tomatoes, the film is divisive.
Final verdict — 7.1/10
A flawed but affecting melodrama — the critics were cold, but the audiences were right to warm to it. Bring tissues, and bring patience for the contrivances.
