Synopsis (spoiler-free)

At a star-studded charity gala on a Greek island, a fading movie star trying to rebuild his career is taken hostage with two others by Joan, a radical eco-warrior who believes a volcanic prophecy demands three sacrifices to save humanity from extinction.

Our detailed review

Story — 5.5/10

The setup is delicious: a charity gala full of celebrities, billionaires and empty speeches, crashed by true believers who want to throw three of them into a volcano. For a while the film crackles — the clash between performative wealth and performative activism is a rich target. But Gavras and co-writer Will Arbery never decide what they are satirising: the rich, the activists, celebrity itself, or all three at once. The prophecy plot gets convoluted, the hostage tension leaks away, and the film's big ideas dissolve into noise.

Acting — 7.0/10

Anya Taylor-Joy mesmerises as Joan — passionate, naive, dangerous, and the only character who fully believes in something. Chris Evans is game as Mike Tyler, the fading star in an existential crisis, and he finds real comic pathos in the role. Vincent Cassel, Salma Hayek Pinault, John Malkovich and Sam Richardson round out a dream ensemble, though several of them are reduced to types. Charli XCX, appearing as Mother Nature for one elaborately choreographed number, steals her scene outright.

Direction — 6.5/10

Gavras, who made the incendiary Athena, directs with total visual confidence: the Greek locations, shot by Matias Boucard, are stunning, and the camera moves with music-video precision. But confidence is not the same as control — the film lurches between thriller, farce and sermon without ever committing, and its most bravura sequence (the Charli XCX number, interrupted by Taylor-Joy firing a machine gun into the air) only highlights how flat the rest of the satire feels.

Music — 7.0/10

GENER8ION's score is one of the film's genuine strengths — strings, electronics and choir woven into a disorienting, arresting sound that keeps the film feeling dangerous even when the script goes soft. The soundtrack's showpiece is Charli XCX's cover of Cerrone's 'Supernature', staged as a full production number inside the gala, and it is the single most memorable scene in the film.

Final verdict — 6.2/10

Gorgeous, starry, and frustratingly toothless — a satire that never draws blood. Watch it for Taylor-Joy and the spectacle; don't expect the bite of Athena.
