Trying to leave their troubled lives behind, twin brothers Smoke and Stack (both played by Michael B. Jordan) return to their hometown in 1930s Mississippi to start again — by opening a juke joint for their community. One night of music, dancing and freedom is all they want. What arrives instead is an even greater evil, waiting to be invited in.

Story — 9.0/10
Sinners is the rare horror film that is really about something: home, history and the music people carry with them. The first half plays like a rich period drama — two brothers buying a sawmill, hiring local musicians, cooking, arguing and dreaming — and that slow build is the whole point. By the time the vampires arrive, you care about every person in the room, so the horror has somewhere to land. The film also has real things to say about race, faith and survival in the Jim Crow South, and it says them through character, never through speeches.
Acting — 9.5/10
Michael B. Jordan's dual performance is the engine of the film. Smoke and Stack share a face but not a temper — one is steady and guarded, the other is charming and reckless — and Jordan makes you forget within minutes that one actor is playing both men. Miles Caton, as the young blues singer Sammie, is a genuine discovery, and his voice carries the film's emotional core. Jack O'Connell is chilling as the smiling stranger Remmick, while Hailee Steinfeld, Wunmi Mosaku and Delroy Lindo all get moments that feel lived-in rather than written.

Ryan Coogler directs with total confidence. The juke-joint centrepiece — a single sequence in which past, present and future musicians share the same room — is one of the great set pieces of recent years, and it works because Coogler trusts the audience to feel it rather than explaining it. The horror, when it comes, is patient: long takes, real darkness, and violence that is sudden and ugly instead of cartoonish. Shot on film for IMAX, the movie looks like a memory — warm, grainy and haunted.

Ludwig Göransson's score is not background; it is the film's soul. Delta blues runs through every scene, and the music is treated as something almost supernatural — a force that can summon ancestors or attract monsters. The songs performed in the juke joint are recorded live and raw, and they are the reason the film's middle act feels like a celebration before it turns into a siege.
