Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Four years have passed since the world forgot that Peter Parker exists. No one remembers him — not MJ, not Ned, not even his aunt May's memory lives on in anyone but him. Peter is Spider-Man full-time now, a lone guardian swinging through a New York that celebrates the hero and has never heard of the man. But the job is changing him: his senses are sharpening, his powers are evolving in ways he does not understand, and a strange pattern of crimes is spreading through the city. Behind it all is a threat no one can see — a telepath who can wear any face, possess any body, and get inside the one mind she cannot enter: his.

Story — 8.5/10

Brand New Day does something brave for a film of this size: it gets smaller. After the multiverse spectacle of No Way Home, this is a street-level story about a young man who gave up everything — his name, his friends, his love — and has to decide whether the sacrifice was worth it. The film's best idea is also its saddest: Peter keeps visiting MJ and Ned from a distance, watching them live happy lives that have no room for him, and every visit costs him something. The villain's story mirrors his own — a lonely teenager searching for a lost sister — which gives the conflict real emotional weight instead of just spectacle. The middle act juggles a lot of characters (the Punisher, the Hulk, Yelena, the Department of Damage Control), and a few of those threads feel crowded, but the film never loses sight of its core question: can Peter Parker be a person, or only Spider-Man?

Acting — 9.0/10

Tom Holland gives the best performance of his career. The boyish charm of the earlier films is still there, but it is worn down now — this Peter is tired, lonely and quietly angry, and Holland plays all of it without ever asking for sympathy. His scenes with Zendaya are heartbreaking precisely because MJ does not know him; she is warm, funny and completely unreachable. Sadie Sink is a revelation as Jean Grey, playing her not as a villain but as a hurt, furious teenager whose powers have outgrown her control — you fear her and feel for her at the same time. Jon Bernthal brings real menace and unexpected tenderness as the Punisher, and Mark Ruffalo's Banner is a warm, weary mentor. The whole cast understands the assignment: this is a film about people first, superheroes second.

Direction — 9.0/10

Destin Daniel Cretton, who made Shang-Chi, directs with total confidence. The action is the best in the series — grounded, physical and easy to follow, from a brutal street fight with the Punisher to a genuinely frightening sequence in which the telepath hops from body to body through a crowd. But Cretton is at his best in the quiet scenes: Peter eating alone, Peter standing outside MJ's apartment in the rain, Peter realising his own body is changing in ways he cannot control. The film was shot on location in Glasgow and across England, and the real streets give New York a texture the earlier films never had. Cretton trusts his actors and his audience, and the film is better for it.

Music — 8.5/10

Michael Giacchino returns to the series with a score that is darker and more melancholy than his earlier Spider-Man work. The familiar heroic theme appears, but it is used sparingly — mostly in moments when Peter chooses to be a hero despite having nothing left to gain from it, which makes each appearance land harder. The score leans on low strings and uneasy percussion for the telepath's scenes, giving the villain a sound that is genuinely creepy. The opening montage, set to TV on the Radio's "Wolf Like Me", is one of the most striking sequences in any Marvel film. It is a score that understands the film's mood perfectly.

What works

• Tom Holland's best performance as Spider-Man — raw, lonely and grown-up.
• Sadie Sink's Jean Grey: a villain you fear and feel for at the same time.
• Grounded, physical action and a street-level story that feels real.
• An emotional core — the cost of being forgotten — that actually hurts.

What doesn't work

• The middle act is crowded — the Punisher, Hulk, Yelena and Damage Control all compete for screen time.
• A few plot threads (like the DODC conspiracy) feel under-explained.
• The new powers take a while to make sense, and the film rushes their explanation.
