Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Three years into his career as Earth's protector, Superman faces his biggest test yet: a world turning against him, a genius enemy in Lex Luthor, and a question he has never had to answer — what does it mean to be human when you are not one?
Our detailed review
Story — 8.0/10
James Gunn makes a smart choice: he skips the origin story entirely. This Superman is already here — already saving people, already in love with Lois Lane, already making mistakes. The plot throws him into a political crisis, a public trial by media, and a Lex Luthor scheme that is genuinely clever, and the film's real subject is kindness itself: whether being good is naive or the bravest thing a person can do. The middle act sags a little under the weight of too many characters, but the story's heart never wavers.
Acting — 8.5/10
David Corenswet is a superb new Superman — warm, earnest and funny in a way that makes the character feel human rather than statuesque. Rachel Brosnahan's Lois Lane is sharp and fearless, and their relationship is the film's emotional anchor. Nicholas Hoult plays Lex Luthor as a man whose intelligence has curdled into pure spite, and he is hateful in the best way. The supporting cast, including Edi Gathegi's scene-stealing Mister Terrific, keeps the film buzzing.
Direction — 9.0/10
Gunn directs with the confidence of a man who knows exactly what film he is making. The flying sequences are thrilling, the action is clean and readable, and the colour palette is bright and hopeful — a deliberate break from the grey, joyless DC films of the past decade. Best of all, he trusts the audience: the film drops you into a lived-in world full of superheroes and trusts you to keep up.
Music — 8.5/10
John Murphy and David Fleming's score weaves the classic John Williams theme in gently, so that when it finally swells, it feels earned rather than cheap. The original music is warm and heroic without being bombastic, and the needle drops are chosen with a smile.
What works
- David Corenswet is a genuinely great Superman — kind, funny and believable.
- A hopeful tone that finally lets DC be fun again.
- Nicholas Hoult's Lex Luthor and Edi Gathegi's Mister Terrific steal scenes.
- Thrilling flying sequences and a lived-in superhero world.
What doesn't work
- The middle act is crowded — too many heroes competing for screen time.
- A couple of plot turns rely on characters making convenient mistakes.
Final verdict — 8.5/10
A warm, hopeful reboot that remembers Superman is supposed to inspire people. The best DC film in years — see it on the biggest screen you can.
