Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Alok is a struggling journalist who stumbles into a jungle, meets a mysterious woman named Tadaka, and wakes up a vampire — a betaal — in the middle of a war between an ancient sect and the modern world. A bloody love story from the Maddock Horror Comedy Universe, where the scariest thing is falling in love with the wrong person.
Our detailed review
Story — 7.5/10
Thamma's premise is its best asset: a betaal love story with a Diwali heartbeat. The first half is a delight — Alok discovering his powers, the romance with Tadaka, the world-building of the betaal clan. The second half gets crowded: a 1947 subplot the film does not need, a climax that drags, and horror that is softer than Stree or Bhediya. But the film's festive energy and its central romance keep it moving.
Acting — 8.0/10
Ayushmann Khurrana is charming as Alok, the ordinary man turned betaal, and his chemistry with Rashmika Mandanna's Tadaka carries the film through its messier stretches. Nawazuddin Siddiqui is deliciously menacing as Yakshasan, and Paresh Rawal brings his usual warmth. The Varun Dhawan cameo as Bhediya brings the house down.
Direction — 8.0/10
Aditya Sarpotdar directs with confidence and colour: the betaal world, the transformations and the climactic battle show a genuine step up in VFX for the franchise. The film's pacing falters in the climax, but the visual flair never does — Thamma looks like a Diwali blockbuster should.
Music — 8.5/10
Sachin-Jigar deliver a festive, catchy soundtrack that does heavy lifting for the film's mood — the songs land, the background score keeps the energy up, and the music is a big reason the film works as a holiday watch.
What works
- A fun premise: a betaal love story with real heart.
- Ayushmann and Rashmika's chemistry, plus Nawazuddin's menace.
- Strong VFX and a festive, colourful look.
- Sachin-Jigar's music and the Bhediya cameo.
What doesn't work
- The climax drags and the 1947 subplot is unnecessary.
- The horror is softer than Stree or Bhediya.
- Uneven humour in the second half.
Final verdict — 7.9/10
A fun, festive bloody love story — uneven, but charming enough to win the Diwali crowd.

A profitable but below-expectations run: it became Ayushmann Khurrana's highest-grossing film in India and the 8th-highest Bollywood grosser of its year, but trade called it only Average against its big budget, with weak legs after the festive weekend.
