Synopsis (spoiler-free)

In a near-future America where the government has been privatised into a TV network, desperate father Ben Richards volunteers for the deadliest show on television: survive 30 days while professional Hunters — and every viewer in the country — try to kill him for cash. The prize could save his sick daughter. The odds say he will be dead within a week.

Our detailed review

Story — 7.5/10

Wright and co-writer Michael Bacall go back to Stephen King's novel rather than the 1987 Schwarzenegger film, and the film is better for it: this Running Man is a road movie through a decaying, televised America, not a gladiator arena. The satire is sharp in flashes — a country that watches a man die for entertainment — but it stays at slogan level, and once the premise is set the middle repeats the same chase-and-hide beat too often before the final act reignites.

Acting — 8.0/10

Glen Powell is perfectly cast as Ben Richards — all charm, fury and desperation, a movie star who can also sell exhaustion. Josh Brolin oozes menace as producer Dan Killian, and Colman Domingo steals every scene as the show's host Bobby Thompson, a showman who knows exactly what he is selling. Lee Pace, Michael Cera and Emilia Jones round out a cast that never wastes a scene.

Direction — 8.0/10

Wright stages the chases with his usual musical precision, cutting on movement and letting the camera run with its hero. The film looks great — battered, neon, lived-in — and the action geography is always clear. Where it falters is rhythm: at 133 minutes it is the longest-feeling Wright film, and a tighter cut would have sharpened both the satire and the suspense.

Music — 7.5/10

Steven Price's score keeps the pulse up without drawing attention to itself, and the needle drops are well chosen. It serves the film rather than elevating it — effective, not memorable.

Final verdict — 7.6/10

A propulsive, hugely likeable action film whose satire never cuts as deep as its chases run.

VerdictFlop

The Running Man opened well below its $20 million-plus tracking and collapsed against Now You See Me: Now You Don't. Glen Powell later blamed Paramount's marketing layoffs during the studio's merger. Against a $110 million budget it recovered barely 60% of its production cost.
