Synopsis (spoiler-free)
Mark Kerr was the most feared heavyweight in mixed martial arts — a two-time UFC tournament champion and the dominant force of the sport's brutal early years. Outside the cage, he was losing a different fight: to painkillers, to fame, and to the woman he loved.
Our detailed review
Story — 8.0/10
Safdie adapts the 2002 HBO documentary of the same name, and keeps its honesty: this is a film about damage, not victory. Kerr's rise is shown in brutal, unglamorous detail, and his fall — painkillers, a crumbling relationship, a body breaking down — is shown without judgment. It is deliberately punishing and sometimes too slow, and audiences looking for a Rocky-style triumph will be disappointed. But it is honest, and it lingers.
Acting — 9.0/10
This is the best performance of Dwayne Johnson's career. He disappears into Kerr: the bulk, the soft voice, the terrifying fragility of a man who can beat anyone except himself. Emily Blunt is superb as Dawn Staples, the girlfriend caught between love and self-preservation, and their scenes together are the film's bruised heart. Real fighters in supporting roles — Ryan Bader, Bas Rutten, Oleksandr Usyk — give the cage scenes documentary authenticity.
Direction — 8.5/10
Benny Safdie shoots the early UFC world with bruising intimacy — real sweat, no glamour, cameras close enough to feel every hit. The film won him the Silver Lion for Best Director at Venice, and you can see why: the fight scenes are among the most realistic ever filmed, and the quiet scenes are just as carefully held.
Music — 7.5/10
Nala Sinephro's score is spare and atmospheric, underlining the film's loneliness rather than pumping up its fights. It serves the film well, though it rarely steps forward on its own.
What works
- Dwayne Johnson's career-best, fully committed performance.
- Emily Blunt and a bruised, honest central relationship.
- Brutally realistic fight scenes and documentary texture.
- A Venice-winning director at the top of his craft.
What doesn't work
- Deliberately punishing and sometimes too slow.
- No crowd-pleasing triumph arc — this is a film about damage.
- The score stays in the background throughout.
Final verdict — 8.2/10
Johnson's career-best performance anchors a gritty, unglamorous drama about real damage.
