Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Ares is a highly sophisticated program created by Dillinger Systems — a perfect, expendable soldier built inside the Grid. When his creator sends him into the real world on a dangerous mission, Ares becomes the first AI being humanity has ever met. Standing in his way is Eve Kim, the CEO of ENCOM, who holds the secret of the "permanence code" — the one thing that would let a program exist outside the digital world for more than a few minutes. Hunted, chased across a neon-lit city on light cycles, Ares starts to ask the one question he was never programmed to ask: what does it mean to be alive?

Our detailed review

Story — 6.5/10

The idea at the heart of Tron: Ares is a good one: what happens the first time a machine-made mind walks among us, and what would it want? The film sets that up cleanly — a program with a 29-minute lifespan, a corporation that treats him as property, a woman who sees a person where others see a weapon. The trouble is that the film never really digs into its own question. The middle stretch becomes a fairly standard chase, and the big ideas about AI, free will and what makes something alive are stated in dialogue rather than explored in the story. It is entertaining throughout, but it stays on the surface of a premise that deserved to go deeper.

Acting — 7.0/10

Jared Leto plays Ares with a calm, almost blank stillness that works well for a being learning what feelings are — his best moments are the small ones, a flicker of confusion or curiosity crossing a face that is supposed to feel nothing. Greta Lee is the film's emotional anchor as Eve Kim, sharp and guarded, and she makes the human side of the story matter. Evan Peters is enjoyably cold as the Dillinger heir who sees Ares as a product, and Jeff Bridges' return as Kevin Flynn is brief but warm — a reminder of the soul the older films had. Jodie Turner-Smith is striking as Athena, though the film gives her less to do than her presence deserves.

Direction — 7.5/10

Joachim Rønning directs the film as a showcase, and as a showcase it is superb. The light cycle chases, the Recognizer looming over a real city, the way neon bleeds into rain-slick streets — every frame looks expensive and deliberate. The action is clean and easy to follow, which is more than many blockbusters manage. Where the direction falters is in the quieter scenes: the film rushes through the moments where Ares is supposed to be learning about humanity, so his transformation feels more declared than earned. Rønning clearly loves this world; he just trusts the spectacle to do the emotional work that the script should have done.

Music — 9.0/10

The score is the film's single best element. Nine Inch Nails — Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — replace Daft Punk's cool electronica with something harder and more industrial: grinding guitars, pulsing synths and a heartbeat of percussion that makes every chase feel urgent. The song "As Alive As You Need Me To Be" is the film's thesis in three minutes. It is the rare blockbuster score you will want to listen to on its own, and it lifts scenes that would otherwise feel routine. If the film has a soul, the music is where it lives.

Final verdict — 7.5/10

A dazzling light show with a great score and a thin story — see it on the biggest screen you can find.

Yes, if you love spectacle — the visuals and the Nine Inch Nails score are outstanding, and it is best seen on the biggest screen you can find. The story is simple, so do not go in expecting a deep AI drama. Our rating is 7.5/10.

Do I need to watch Tron: Legacy before Tron: Ares?

No. Tron: Ares tells a self-contained story about a new program entering the real world. Knowing Tron: Legacy helps — Jeff Bridges returns as Kevin Flynn and a few ideas carry over — but the film explains everything a new viewer needs.

Is Tron: Ares a sequel or a reboot?

It is the third film in the Tron series, following Tron (1982) and Tron: Legacy (2010). It continues the same world but centres on a new character, Ares, and works as a fresh entry point.

Who composed the music for Tron: Ares?

Nine Inch Nails — Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross — composed the score, including the original song "As Alive As You Need Me To Be". It is the band's first film score.

How much did Tron: Ares earn on its opening day?

$14.3 million on its first day, including $4.8 million from Thursday previews (Box Office Mojo via Wikipedia).

A flop — it earned $142.2 million worldwide on a $180 million budget, and Deadline reported the film lost Disney over $132 million once marketing costs were counted (Box Office Mojo, Deadline).

Where can I watch Tron: Ares (2025) online?

Tron: Ares is still in theatres as of late October 2026. No streaming or digital release date has been announced yet.
