Synopsis (spoiler-free)

Lowen Ashleigh is a struggling writer who can barely sell her own books — until she is hired to finish the bestselling series of Verity Crawford, a famous author left unable to write after a terrible accident. Lowen moves into the Crawfords' lakeside home in Vermont, where Verity lies silent in her room and her husband Jeremy grieves for the daughter they lost. While sorting through Verity's notes, Lowen finds an unfinished autobiography — a manuscript full of disturbing confessions about her marriage, her children and what really happened in that house. The more Lowen reads, the less she knows who to believe: the woman in the bed, the husband who seems too perfect, or the manuscript itself.

Our detailed review

Story — 7.0/10

Verity is built on a deliciously nasty premise — a writer hired to finish someone else's books finds a secret manuscript that may be a confession, a fantasy, or a trap — and for most of its runtime the film rides that premise hard. The twists come thick and fast, and the central question (is Verity faking it, and if so, who is the real villain here?) keeps you guessing right to the end. The problem is the same one the book's critics always pointed out: the more the film explains, the less it all adds up. The final act piles on revelations until the logic starts to fray, and the ending deliberately leaves you unsure what to believe — which some viewers will love and others will find frustrating. Still, as a piece of glossy, page-turning pulp, it works: you will not be bored for a second.

Acting — 8.0/10

Anne Hathaway is the reason to watch. Even lying still for much of the film, she commands every scene she is in — a flicker of an eye, a half-smile, a look that might be a threat or might be nothing at all. When she finally gets to speak and move, she is magnetic, funny and frightening in the same breath. Dakota Johnson is a fine counterweight as Lowen, playing her as watchful and quietly ambitious rather than innocent; you are never quite sure whether she is a victim or an opportunist, which is exactly the point. Josh Hartnett is charming and slippery as Jeremy, the grieving husband who may or may not be exactly what he seems. The three of them together make the film's love triangle feel genuinely dangerous.

Direction — 7.0/10

Michael Showalter, best known for comedies, leans into the material's trashy glamour with a straight face — and that is the right call. The Vermont house is shot like a gothic mansion, all rain, firelight and long corridors, and the film moves at a confident, unhurried pace that lets the tension build. The VistaVision photography and the premium-format presentation give a modest thriller the feel of a much bigger film. Where the direction wobbles is in tone: the film wants to be both a serious psychological drama and a campy guilty pleasure, and it never quite decides which one it is. The result is a film that is funnier than it means to be in places — though, to be fair, that is part of its charm.

Music — 7.5/10

Volker Bertelmann's score is subtle and effective — low piano figures and uneasy strings that creep under the dialogue and make the quiet house feel watched. It never overplays the scares, which suits a thriller that is more about suspicion than shock. The licensed songs scattered through the film — including tracks by FKA Twigs, Kali Uchis and The Marías — give it a modern, seductive sheen that fits the world of bestselling authors and beautiful people with ugly secrets. It is a good score rather than a great one: it serves the film well without ever stealing a scene.

Final verdict — 7.4/10

A glossy, twisty guilty pleasure — Hathaway is superb, and the book's fans will have a great time.
