Synopsis (spoiler-free)
When all but one child from the same class mysteriously vanish on the same night at exactly the same time, a community is left questioning who or what is behind their disappearance. The teacher whose classroom emptied overnight becomes the town's prime suspect, a grieving father starts his own investigation, and everyone in the small town of Maybrook has a theory — all of them wrong.
Our detailed review
Story — 9.0/10
Weapons opens with one of the great horror premises — a whole class of children gone in a single night — and then does something brave: it tells the story in chapters, one character at a time, so the mystery deepens instead of shrinking. Each chapter rewinds the same days from a different person's eyes — the teacher, the father, the troubled police officer, the addict, the child who stayed behind — and every retelling changes what you thought you knew. The structure keeps you permanently off-balance, and the final act pays off the slow build with a reveal that is genuinely shocking. It is a film about grief and blame as much as it is about horror: the scariest thing in Maybrook is how quickly neighbours turn on each other.
Acting — 9.0/10
Julia Garner is heartbreaking as Justine, the teacher the whole town decides to blame, playing her as flawed and frightened rather than saintly — which makes the town's cruelty sting more. Josh Brolin brings a father's fury that never turns cartoonish; his Archer is a man breaking apart in real time. Alden Ehrenreich is excellent as a police officer whose own bad decisions keep catching up with him, and young Cary Christopher holds the whole film together as Alex, the one child who did not run. Amy Madigan's late arrival in the story is unforgettable — one of the year's most unsettling performances.
Direction — 9.0/10
Zach Cregger, following up his 2022 hit Barbarian, proves that film was no fluke. He mixes dread with dark, almost slapstick humour and trusts the audience to sit with discomfort — long silences, ordinary streets that suddenly feel wrong, and scares that come from what you half-see rather than what jumps at you. The chapter structure is a risk, and it works: each segment ends on a note that reframes the last one. The climax is wild, funny and terrifying at once, and it earns its chaos because the film spent two hours making you care.
Music — 8.0/10
The score, by Ryan Holladay, Hays Holladay and Cregger himself, is deliberately restrained — low drones, uneasy strings and long stretches of silence that make the town feel empty. It never tells you when to be scared, which makes the sudden bursts of sound hit harder. It is effective rather than memorable: you will not hum it afterwards, but while watching, it keeps your shoulders tense.
What works
- A brilliant premise told through a chapter structure that keeps deepening the mystery.
- Outstanding ensemble acting, especially Julia Garner and Josh Brolin.
- A final act that is shocking, strange and darkly funny.
- Real themes underneath the scares: grief, blame and a community falling apart.
What doesn't work
- A few story threads are left loose and never fully explained.
- The tonal swings into comedy will not work for every horror fan.
Final verdict — 8.7/10
A chilling puzzle-box horror that earns every gasp — Cregger's best film yet. Go in knowing as little as possible.
